New York, NY. Aug 20, 2025, 4:30 p.m. - In a recent report by The Williams Institute, new figures reveal that Black Americans making the leap to live openly as transgender are a vital part of the nation’s shifting landscape. About 2.2% of Black adults and youth now identify as trans — a number that underscores the community’s growing presence and visibility.
While overall trans numbers hover around 2.8 million Americans, Black individuals comprise a significant slice of that pie. In fact, regions across the country show similar percentages: 2.3% in the Midwest and just over 2.2% in the South, and Northeast and West — meaning Black trans people are everywhere.
Activists say these numbers reflect a broader push for acceptance, but challenges remain. Black trans Americans often face higher hurdles in healthcare, employment, and safety than their peers. Yet, despite obstacles, the community continues to grow stronger, louder, and more visible.
As society begins to recognize the diversity within the trans community, it’s clear that Black voices and experiences must be front and center. The data confirms what many already know — Black trans Americans are an unstoppable force shaping the future of equality.
