NEW YORK, Dec. 5, 2025, 1 p.m. — A Minneapolis father of five criticized President Donald Trump after the president referred to Somali migrants as “garbage” and suggested they should “go back to where they came from,” comments that have drawn widespread condemnation.
Mohamed Ahmed, who once supported Trump, told CNN News Central that the remarks were deeply hurtful. “My children are not garbage,” Ahmed said. “We campaigned for you. We believed in your hope for a better America. But your words hurt us. We work, we contribute, and we deserve respect.”
Trump made the comments earlier this week during a Cabinet meeting and a photo opportunity in the Oval Office. His remarks prompted swift backlash from Minnesota officials, including Gov. Tim Walz, who said the president’s language was “racist, reckless, and unacceptable.”
“These are doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, children — not garbage,” Walz said.

The controversy comes amid ongoing national debates over immigration and race. Community leaders in Minnesota and across the country said Trump’s rhetoric risks deepening divisions. Protests have erupted in several cities, with demonstrators calling for respect and dignity for immigrant families.
Ahmed’s statement underscores the personal impact of political rhetoric. “Beneath the politics are real families and real children,” he said.
