New York, NY. Nov. 28, 2025, 11 a.m. - In a developing story that has sent shockwaves through South Florida, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick posted bond Tuesday after surrendering to federal authorities in Miami. The embattled lawmaker faces a 15-count indictment alleging she stole $5 million in FEMA funds, allegedly funneling the money through her family business and campaign coffers.
The only public glimpse of Cherfilus-McCormick came inside the courthouse, where she appeared in handcuffs, flanked by her stunned husband. Outside, her attorneys vehemently denied the charges, claiming she’s being unfairly targeted in a politically motivated attack.
Federal prosecutors allege a complex scheme involving theft of government funds, money laundering, straw donor contributions, and false tax filings. If convicted on all counts, Cherfilus-McCormick could face over 50 years behind bars and fines exceeding $2 million.
During her brief court appearance, the congresswoman acknowledged the charges, but her legal team quickly pushed back. “This government is willing to charge and arrest without evidence,” said interim counsel Lauren Krasnoff, adding, “We've seen this pattern, especially targeting Black lawmakers.”
The judge approved her release on a $25,000 personal surety bond, with restrictions on travel within the southeastern U.S. and D.C. Cherfilus-McCormick is scheduled to appear again on December 29 for arraignment and to confirm her legal representation.
As she left the courthouse, her husband refused to comment. The coming weeks will be critical as the congresswoman’s legal team vows to prove her innocence. Meanwhile, critics and supporters alike are watching closely as this high-profile case unfolds in the heart of Miami’s political scene.
