U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee Welcomes Secretary Paulson To The Bay Area
U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, California Democrat, released the following statement in response to Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson's Oakland visit:
"I welcome Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to Oakland to discuss financial literacy and the ongoing foreclosure crisis. I am pleased that he is in my Congressional District and I look forward to working with him to provide quick relief to Bay Area families suffering during this economic downturn.
"As a former Member of the House Financial Services Committee for eight years, and now as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have been working to build bipartisan support to enact strong predatory lending laws to reform the subprime mortgage industry and to increase financial literacy.
"I hope the Administration will consider issuing a moratorium on foreclosures to prevent individuals and families from losing their homes in addition to expanding financial literacy initiatives. We must get to the root cause of this disaster to prevent the American dream from turning into a nightmare."
Lee is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and co-founder of the Out of Poverty Caucus. She serves as Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and is First Vice-Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.
