MILLER: NAS’ ATTEMPT IS MISGUIDED

By: Attorney Roy Miller

Nov. 28, 2007, 10:20 a.m. -  It appears that Nas and others feel that those against whom the n-word is brandished should get used to the intentional disrespect, until it doesn’t hurt anymore.

Racists and disrespectful Blacks who use the N-word are the ones who should make an attitude adjustment, not those they are disparaging. Erasing the racial stigma from the n-word would only benefit racists, who are sued in discrimination actions and arrested for hate crimes. Why would Black people aid racists, by indicating that the use of the n-word is acceptable? Many discrimination cases depend on witnesses of N-word usage as the best evidence.

There are those who throw rocks of racism and there are those who get hit by rocks of racism. It is not right to condition those being hit by the rocks to pretend that getting hit doesn’t hurt.
While Nas may have good intentions, the effect of ignoring the liberal use of the n-word will not benefit those who are labeled by it. We must encourage respect and not accept the disrespect inherent in the use of the n-word.

In 1994, Attorney Roy Miller became the first and only person to succeed at having the n-word deleted from a major dictionary. Attorney Miller went, by invitation, and joined arguments for passage of the Baltimore and New York City resolutions discouraging n-word usage.

(Miller provides legal services to Redding Communications, Inc., (RCI), the parent company of Redding News Review).
