By Robert "Rob" Redding Jr.
Publisher
James Smith, 33, of Gaithersburg, said he and four partners paid $125,000 to G Town Entertainment owner Wesley Powell and $250,000 to another man to set up a July 24 show at Orlando's Amway Arena, according to a civil lawsuit filed in a Washington, D.C. court. The second man, who lives in California, is not yet named in the suit.
Redding News Review is not identifying the man until a suit is filed.
"They basically took our money and said, 'Try to get it back from us,' " said James Smith, who is working to find a California-based attorney to take the case against the second man.Story continues below ↓

Smith said he paid Powell, a
booking agent doing business in Northeast, to set up the show, but never heard
anything back from the two men.
But Powell, who at first denied owing money to Smith, said that he has been
trying to get Smith's money back.
"We are totally with James in getting him all of his money...plus more
money," he said.
Alan Floyd, Knowles' tour manager, said he also has tried to help Smith get
his money back, but is powerless to help.
"I am a tour manager," Floyd said. "It is out of my jurisdiction."
Smith, who said he has promoted concerts for teen hip-hop outfit B2K, gospel
star Kirk Franklin and Fugees co-founder Wyclef Jean, said although he estimates
there were around 9,000 people at the show he and his partners were frozen out
of the show proceeds.
"I have never had this issue before," said Smith, who is a mortgage broker
by day. "The mortgage business is not doing that well right now, and who has
$400,000 to give away at any point?"
