WASHINGTON, Sept. 20, 2006, 5:45 p.m. - Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. today defended President Bush, who was called "the devil" by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in an address to the United Nations.
"President Chavez demonstrated a lack of decency, lack of integrity and moral bankruptcy when he referred to President Bush today as a devil," Ford said in a statement.

Ford, a Tennessee Democrat who is running for Senate, continued: "Although I disagree with President Bush on many policies, I have the greatest respect for him. That kind of name calling has no place in decent society. President Chavez owes President Bush and the American people an apology, and he should be condemned by the U.N. for his language."
Ford has also called for the UN to condemn Chavez.
"Congress should consider withholding all funding for the United Nations until Secretary General Kofi Annan - who I hold in high regard - issues a forceful condemnation of President Chavez," he said. "There is simply no place in the U.N. or any other part of decent society for President Chavez's name calling yesterday."
